Freediving Competitions
Overview
For those with a competitive spirit and a drive to be the best at what they love, Pure Apnea provides the infrastructure to organise, run and compete in sanctioned freediving competitions throughout the world. We strive to make competitions accessible and affordable to all those who are passionate about the sport of freediving.
Pure Apnea regulates competitive freediving events and ratifies national and world records for various disciplines. The sports disciplines are described below.
Pure Apnea is the only organisation in the world that recognises the national and world freediving records of other international organisations including CMAS, AIDA and Guiness World Records. We also encourage our competitive athletes by ratifying records within Pure Apnea itself.
Disciplines
Static Apnea (STA)
Static Apnea involves athletes holding their breath and lying face down in water for as long as possible. This discipline tests a freediver’s breath holding ability and is regarded as one of the most mentally challenging.
Dynamic with Fins (DYN)
In this discipline the athlete swims as far as possible underwater on one breath with the aid of diving fins. Records for this discipline are separated into two categories based on fin type, namely ‘Monofin’ or ‘Bi-fin’.
Dynamic without Fins (DNF)
In this discipline the athlete swims as far as possible underwater on one breath without the aid of diving fins.
Free Immersion (FIM)
The athlete descends to depth and back up by pulling on a vertical diving rope.
Constant Weight (CWT)
Constant Weight involves diving to depth and back up with the aid of diving fins, but without pulling on the diving rope. Records for this discipline are separated into two categories based on fin type, namely ‘Monofin’ or ‘Bi-fin’.
Constant Weight without Fins (CNF)
In this discipline the athlete dives to depth and back up without the aid of diving fins and without pulling on the diving rope.
